God of War: Sons of Sparta Reveals Kratos Early Years, Developers Share Why the Studio Is Called Mega Cat

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new 2D action-adventure prequel for PlayStation 5, developed by Mega Cat Studios with support from Santa Monica Studio. The game tells the story of a young Kratos during his Spartan training at the Agoge, where he trains and fights alongside his brother Deimos. It is presented as a side-scrolling game with a 2D retro-style action adventure with pixel-art visuals.

The story takes place at the earliest point in the timeline, before Kratos learns about his godhood. In this game, he is shown as a devoted Spartan who believes strongly in the Greek gods and depends on them for strength. This idea is also part of the gameplay through items called “Gifts of Olympus,” which help in combat, movement, and solving puzzles.

The writers chose this period to show more of Kratos’ past and to help players better understand his character and how his early life connects to the family themes seen in later games. The bond between Kratos and Deimos is an important part of the story, and the title Sons of Sparta reflects the focus on brotherhood and the tough Spartan way of life.

For Mega Cat Studios, the project is a major achievement. The team had wanted to work on the God of War series for years, and their idea of making a retro-style version was accepted by Sony. The studio has also shared that its name came from a rescued kitten adopted by CEO James Deighan, a story that became part of the studio’s identity.

Public reaction on X (Twitter) to fact that studio is named after a kitten was mostly positive and fun.

One was surprised and amused that the studio named their cat “Mega Cat,” and they found it funny and cute.

Other one liked the idea of naming the studio after a cat, saying it makes the studio feel more personal and unique.

Another one was also happy because the announcement talked about the origins of Kratos, so they felt the news was interesting as well as entertaining.

God of War: Sons of Sparta is available digitally on the PlayStation Store for PS5 and offers a different style of gameplay while exploring an early chapter of Kratos’ life.
