Sony and Santa Monica Studio have confirmed that a full remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy is in early development. At the same time, the studio has released a new 2D prequel called God of War: Sons of Sparta, which is now available on PlayStation 5. The announcements were made as part of the series’ upcoming 20th anniversary celebrations.
The remake project is still in its early stage. Sony has said that players may have to wait before seeing gameplay or getting a release date. Reports also say that TC Carson, who voiced Kratos in the original Greek-era games, is returning, which has caught the attention of longtime fans.
Alongside the remake news, Sons of Sparta was released without much advance notice. The game is a 2D action-platformer developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with Santa Monica Studio. It tells a canon story about a young Kratos and his brother Deimos during their training in Sparta. The game focuses on combat and story moments from Kratos’ early life, showing events that happened before the main games.
There are also reports from industry insiders that Santa Monica Studio may be working on another major project that has not been announced yet. The studio has not confirmed this, but it has been widely discussed in the gaming community.
Public reaction on X (Twitter) to the announcement was lively. Some people were excited because they never got the chance to play the original games and are happy to try the remakes.

Others made jokes and criticized Sony, saying the company keeps going back to Kratos’ past instead of creating new stories.

Some user reacted in a fun way, imagining famous moments—like Kratos calling Atreus “Boy”—in live action, showing that many people are enjoying the news and discussing it playfully online.

For many players, the return to the Greek era is something they have been asking for over the years. Bringing the older games to modern hardware gives new players a chance to experience them, while smaller projects like Sons of Sparta help expand the story while bigger titles are still being developed.
