Sometimes, life surprises you in the most emotional ways. For Karen L. from Rosedale, Maryland, the new year began with a moment she will never forget—a $1 million lottery win that she believes was guided by her late mother.
The Maryland Lottery Holiday Raffle drawing on January 2 turned out to be more than just a lucky date. It also marked the birthday of Karen’s mother, making the win feel deeply personal. With heartfelt emotion, Karen shared, “I think it is my mom again. She is helping me with my retirement.”
Interestingly, Karen didn’t rush to check her ticket. Instead, she waited until January 5 before scanning it on the Maryland Lottery app. At first, the message simply told her to “Go to Lottery,” leading her to assume she had won a smaller prize. But when a store clerk confidently told her she might be the big winner, reality finally set in: she had won the full $1 million jackpot.
Karen had purchased the $20 Holiday Raffle ticket from a 7-Eleven on Reisterstown Road in Pikesville. Though she regularly plays Powerball, Mega Millions, and scratch-offs, this was her very first Holiday Raffle ticket, making the lottery win even more unbelievable.
Naturally, her plans are both practical and heartfelt. Karen hopes to buy a car, renovate her home, and secure her savings for the future. Even now, she admits the moment still feels unreal, saying, “It still hasn’t hit me yet.”
The Holiday Raffle itself ran from November 3 through January 1 and offered one grand prize of $1 million along with ten $100,000 prizes. More than 237,000 tickets were sold, making Karen’s win feel even more extraordinary.
Karen’s story is the kind that makes you stop and smile because sometimes luck doesn’t shout; it simply shows up when you least expect it. Whether you believe in fate, coincidence, or simple probability, her win feels like more than just numbers on a ticket.
As always, the Maryland Lottery encourages players to participate responsibly and within their limits.
