Nintendo and Illumination have officially revealed the title of the next Mario animated movie. The sequel will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It is set to release in theaters on April 1.The announcement came during a surprise Nintendo Direct hosted by Shigeru Miyamoto, where a new trailer was shown to the public for the first time.
The trailer confirmed that Yoshi will appear in the film and will have a speaking role. Nintendo also shared that animation work on the movie is now complete, with the project moving into post-production. The final phase will focus on sound design and music.
The footage introduced several familiar characters from the Mario universe. Birdo, Lakitu, and Mouser — a boss character from Super Mario Bros. 2 — were all shown in the trailer. A large T-Rex was also featured, closely resembling the one seen in Super Mario Odyssey.
Several locations inspired by the games appeared as well. Mario and Luigi were shown exploring the Sand Kingdom and its Inverted Pyramid. In one scene, Luigi uses the Frog Suit to rescue a Toad. Princess Peach is seen defending herself from Birdo’s eggs in what appears to be a sequence set in Subcon.
Music will play a major role in the sequel. Nintendo confirmed that the film’s score will include re-recorded tracks from the Super Mario Galaxy games. These themes are being performed by a 70-piece orchestra.
During a discussion in a thread from Reddit (r/gaming), some users noticed that a familiar sound plays in the trailer whenever a particular character appears. That same sound can also be heard in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Fans are now discussing whether this was just a fun coincidence or a deliberate reference to another popular animated movie.

Some elements from the first movie will return. Baby Mario and Baby Luigi are set to appear again after their brief debut in the original film.
Most of the main cast is also returning. Chris Pratt will once again voice Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Princess Peach, and Jack Black reprises his role as Bowser. Nintendo also confirmed earlier that Brie Larson will voice Rosalina, while Benny Safdie will play Bowser Jr.
