Fans Feel Excited About First Look at God of War Series Shared by Amazon

Amazon has released the first official photo from its upcoming God of War live-action series and confirmed that production has started in Vancouver. The image shows Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as his son Atreus. The caption shared with the photo reads, Their journey to the highest peak begins, suggesting that the first season will follow the story of the 2018 Norse-era video game.

Ryan Hurst, who voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, now plays Kratos in the live-action show. Callum Vinson, known for Chucky and Poker Face, plays a young version of Atreus, described as a 10-year-old archer who wants to earn his father’s approval. The cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Alastair Duncan returning as the voice of Mimir.

The series is led by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind. The first two episodes are directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, who has worked on Shōgun and The Boys. Cory Barlog, the director of the 2018 God of War game, is an executive producer.

Fans on X had different reactions after the first photo was shared. One person said it looks like very good cosplay and said that Kratos’ voice is the most important part for them. They are not sure if the show can match the strong and deep voice from the game.

Another user was more positive and said Ryan Hurst looks very good as Kratos.

A third person liked the actor playing Atreus and said the kid looks perfect for the role, but they were not fully convinced about Kratos.

Amazon has already approved a second season, but the company has not announced a release date yet.

The project went through changes in late 2024 when Moore joined the team after the original writers left. The show’s story focuses on the relationship between Kratos and Atreus, as they travel together while learning from each other as father and son.
