HYDERABAD, India (GizTimes) — Apple has officially stopped making the Mac Pro, its high-end desktop tower. On Thursday, they confirmed to 9to5Mac that there won’t be a replacement. This ends a brief try at a customizable pro computer. Now, the small but mighty Mac Studio is Apple’s most powerful desktop option.
The Mac Pro was updated in 2023 with the powerful M2 Ultra chip. It was originally launched in 2019 to fix the issues of the 2013 trash-can Mac Pro, which had a round design, was difficult to upgrade, and often overheated. Users wanted a system more like a regular PC, where parts can be easily added or changed. The new Mac Pro had a cheese grater design with slots for extra components, but in reality, it still didn’t offer full flexibility.
Apple’s M-series chips are designed as a system-on-a-chip (SoC), which means the processor, memory, and graphics are all built into one small unit. Because of this, you can’t upgrade things later, like adding more RAM or changing the graphics card, which is possible in many Windows computers. You also can’t connect multiple GPUs for extra power. Apple has even removed support for special Afterburner cards that help speed up video editing. Because of these limits, these systems are mainly useful for certain professionals, like teams working on Apple TV+ or movie studios that do heavy video editing.
Pro users think graphic designers, engineers, or company IT departments love modularity. They buy expensive machines and want to tweak them over the years. Mix old hard drives with new chips. Pass parts to other computers. Spread costs instead of dropping $10,000 at once. The Mac Pro’s fixed setup didn’t fit that. Its sky-high price made upgrades even more important.
Things got worse with today’s tech trends. AI is huge now, training chatbots, deep learning for images, or robot brains. These jobs need tons of graphics power. The Mac Pro skips discrete GPUs (separate graphics cards). Apple ditched Nvidia cards back in 2018 to go all-in on their own chips. Plus, AI demand causes shortages of memory and parts. Modular designs make that messier.
Step forward the Mac Studio. This compact box launched with the Mac Pro but shines now with the M3 Ultra chip. It’s a powerhouse in a tiny size, no big tower needed. It matches Apple’s “everything-on-one-chip“ plan perfectly. Easier to build, even when supplies are tight. Apple doesn’t waste time hunting rare components.
The news hits display too. The giant Pro Display XDR, made for Mac Pro pros, is gone and replaced by the smaller Studio Display XDR with a handy height-adjustable stand. It fits better with the Mac Studio’s style, which is made for both professionals and regular advanced users. This change is a smart move by Apple. The Mac Studio sells more, avoids the problems of upgrades, and lets Apple focus its best chips on the products people actually buy. The 2019 Mac Pro felt a bit forced, and many critics pointed that out. Apple’s real strength is making simple, powerful, and well-designed all-in-one devices.
The announcement brought a mix of nostalgia, criticism, and reflection from (X) Twitter users.
One user gave a respectful farewell to the Mac Pro, thanking it for its service, which shows appreciation for its role over the years.
Another user took a more critical and mocking tone, joking about people who spent over $10,000 on it, suggesting they feel the product was overpriced and not worth it.
Meanwhile, a third user looked back at its history, remembering when Steve Jobs first introduced it, showing a sense of nostalgia and how long the product has been part of Apple’s lineup.
For most professionals, Studio’s tors, it’s better to adjust and make the most of what’s available. The Mac Studio handles video editing, 3D work, and AI tasks very well without being big or bulky. But for people who like to customize everything, building a custom PC with Nvidia parts is a better choice because it offers full flexibility and upgrade options.
