Sony has released a new update for the PlayStation Portal on March 18, 2026. This update mainly improves video quality and makes the device easier to use for both Remote Play and cloud streaming.
The main highlight is the new 1080p High Quality mode. This option gives a clearer and more stable picture by using a higher bitrate. It helps reduce blur and pixel issues while playing. Sony says you should have at least 15 Mbps internet for the best result. This feature is not turned on by default. You can enable it by going to Quick Menu > Max Resolution > 1080p High Quality, and then restarting your session.
Sony has also improved the cloud streaming experience in a few simple ways. Now, you can pick individual games from a bundle directly, which saves time. Game invites will appear as clear pop-ups while you are playing, so you won’t miss them.
Trophy notifications are also better now. They show the trophy name and icon, and Platinum trophies have a special animation, which makes them feel more rewarding.
Search is now faster because the keyboard shows up instantly. New users will also find setup easier, thanks to a QR code login option. You can sign in or create your account using your phone instead of typing everything on the Portal.
People on X (Twitter) are reacting in a positive way to this update. One user said they have been playing Fatal Frame 2 on the PlayStation Portal in bed and called the update a nice surprise, which shows they already enjoy using the device and feel it’s getting better.
Another user said it’s a good upgrade and believes Remote Play will feel smoother now, showing that people expect better performance.
A third user said the Portal keeps getting better, which reflects overall satisfaction.
Sony shared that cloud streaming on the Portal is growing fast. Monthly users increased by 162% compared to last year as of January 2026. Also, more than 50% of Portal users have a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription.
Overall, this update focuses on better quality and a smoother experience, showing that Sony is continuing to improve the PlayStation Portal.
