NVIDIA made a new AI tool called DLSS 5. It promises super-real game graphics. But many gamers and game makers are very upset. They say it makes everything look too perfect and fake. It hurts the special art in games.
NVIDIA showed DLSS 5 at their big yearly meeting in Silicon Valley. It will launch this autumn, around the fall. The tool uses smart AI to create movie-like pictures in games. Think Hollywood special effects right in your video game. It makes hair, clothes, skin, and lights look super real. Demos used games like Resident Evil Requiem and Hogwarts Legacy. The changes were huge characters and places looked totally different.

NVIDIA says this is its best graphics idea ever. It beats their 2018 ray tracing tech. Ray tracing makes light, shadows, and shiny spots look natural. Boss Jensen Huang said, “We are reinventing computer graphics once again.” He promised it would give artists full control. They can still create freely. Big companies back it: Bethesda, CAPCOM, and Warner Bros. Games all said yes.
But the backlash started fast online. People called it “uncanny” and weird. Game critic Alex Donaldson posted on Bluesky: “Environments get a massive glow-up. But characters look hollow and strange. Art might get pushed out.” Jeff Talbot, an artist at Gunfire Games, was mad. He said: “This is NOT the way games should go. Each DLSS 5 picture had less personality than the real one.”
Gamers fear AI steals jobs from human artists. It makes games feel empty, like plastic dolls. NVIDIA was born for gamers. They make top video cards. Now they rule AI chips for big computers. But some say AI goes too far in fun games.
This is part of a bigger problem. Many hate AI in games now. Running With Scissors, makers of Postal shooters, canceled a new game. Critics said it used bad AI graphics. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Game of the Year at the Indie Awards. But they took it away. Why? The team tested AI images, even if they didn’t use them in the end.
Not all agree it’s bad. Some defend AI. Charlie Guillemot helps run Vantage Studios. They make Assassin’s Creed Shadows. He loves DLSS 5. “It changes lighting, stuff, and people,” he said. “Now we can make dream worlds for players. It feels more real.”
The announcement received mixed and somewhat polarized reactions on Twitter (X).
One user clearly rejected the entire idea, saying they did not want any part of it, which shows that not everyone is excited about the direction being taken.
Another user gave a practical explanation, saying that games don’t always look very realistic or high-quality because making them takes a lot of time and money. It’s not that the technology is not good enough, but that developers have limits on budget and time.
Meanwhile, a third user reacted strongly against critics who called the technology “AI slop,” saying they were blocking such people, which reflects how heated and divided opinions have become around the role of AI in gaming.
NVIDIA says DLSS 5 is just a support tool, not something that replaces artists. Game artists are still in control of how things look. The tool mainly helps make games run faster and look better, without fully relying on AI.
There is still some disagreement. Some gamers like graphics made fully by human artists, while others enjoy the better quality that new technology gives. As AI becomes more common in games, developers have to choose what is more important: better performance and visuals, or keeping the human touch in their games.
