Apple has officially announced the AirPods Max 2, the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones and the first major internal upgrade since the original model launched in 2020. The new headphones use Apple’s H2 chip, which brings stronger Active Noise Cancellation, new Apple Intelligence features like Live Translation, and support for lossless audio through USB-C. Apple has priced the headphones at $549 (₹67,900 in India / $749 SGD). Pre-orders will start on March 25, and the headphones will begin shipping and appearing in stores in early April 2026.
The biggest change in AirPods Max 2 is the new H2 chip, which improves audio processing and noise cancellation. Apple says the new system can deliver Active Noise Cancellation that is about 1.5 times more effective than the first generation. The headphones also include a high dynamic range amplifier, which is designed to provide clearer sound and improve the accuracy of Spatial Audio while listening to music, movies, or other content.
Apple has also added several intelligent features powered by Apple Intelligence. One of them is Adaptive Audio, which automatically adjusts between noise cancellation and transparency depending on the environment around the user. Another feature, Conversation Awareness, lowers the volume of music when the user starts speaking so they can talk without removing the headphones. AirPods Max 2 also introduce Live Translation, which allows real-time language translation during in-person conversations when connected to a compatible Apple device. For calls, the headphones use Voice Isolation, a feature that focuses on the user’s voice while reducing background noise.
The new model also adds lossless audio support through a wired USB-C connection. When connected with a USB-C cable, the headphones can play 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio, which Apple says can be useful for podcasters, musicians, and creators who work with apps like Logic Pro.
Apple has also added a small new control feature. The Digital Crown, which is already used to control volume and playback, can now work as a remote camera shutter. Users can press it to take photos or start and stop video recording on a connected iPhone or iPad from a distance.
The physical design of the headphones remains mostly the same as the previous version. AirPods Max 2 still use aluminum ear cups and a mesh headband, and the battery life remains up to 20 hours with Active Noise Cancellation turned on. Apple will offer the headphones in five colors: Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue.
Apple also highlighted sustainability changes in the new model. The magnets use 100% recycled rare earth elements, and the ear cushions are made with 100% recycled polyester. The headphones now come with a USB-C charging cable in the box, completing Apple’s move away from Lightning across the AirPods lineup.

The announcement of AirPods Max 2 received mixed reactions on X (Twitter). Some users pointed out that many of the new features may only work with the latest iPhones that support Apple Intelligence. Because of this, they feel the headphones may push people to buy a newer iPhone, which makes the upgrade less useful for some users.
At the same time, a few people were happy to see lossless audio support through USB-C, saying they like the idea of using one port for charging and wired audio.
Others questioned why Apple kept the same design. They noticed the headphones are not lighter and the silver color option is missing, and some users also wondered if earlier issues like headband wear or condensation inside the ear cups were fixed.
Some comments were more humorous, with one user joking that the headphones are a very expensive way to block out the world while scrolling on a phone for hours.
A user also talked about repair problems, mentioning that fixing things like the hinge cable in the older model was difficult.
Price was another common topic, as some users felt $549 is too expensive for a product that looks almost the same as the 2020 version.
However, some people did like certain features, especially Live Translation, although one user joked that having conversations while wearing large headphones might feel a bit awkward.
