HYDERABAD, India (GizTimes) —Nintendo updated Super Mario Bros. Wonder for Switch 2. The 2023 hit now looks even better with full 4K sharpness, steady 60fps speed, and new multiplayer games. But it skips 120fps, so it’s a good upgrade, not a huge one, for people who own the original and play alone.
The visuals are the big win. On the old Switch, the game already looked amazing. Its fun levels and pretty art made it Nintendo’s top 2D Mario since the old Yoshi’s Island game. Now on Switch 2, it runs at true 4K when docked on TV. No fuzzy edges, everything is super clear. You can see every little detail on Mario and the backgrounds. In handheld mode, it’s sharp 1080p thanks to a new power boost. Some menu bits still look like the old version, but overall, it’s crystal clear. No more tiny stutters from the original game.
The game runs very smoothly at 60 frames per second all the time. This is the same smooth performance seen in games like Splatoon 3, so it feels stable and consistent while playing.
Many people were hoping for 120 frames per second because the Switch 2 is powerful enough to support it. That would have made movements like jumping and running feel even smoother. The marketing created excitement for this, but the game doesn’t include it. The old Switch almost hit 60fps anyway, so this feels like a small step, not a leap.
New stuff makes it worth buying new, not just a free update. Bellabel Park is a whole new area for multiplayer fun like Wii U’s Nintendo Land, but with Mario twists. Play co-op or compete with friends. Cool modes include: using a cursor (with mouse or controller) to place blocks like in Mario Maker, so others can move. Or fight for coins while a big Boo watches, stop moving when its eye opens, or lose coins. There’s also a fresh hide-and-seek game and more. A few new levels mix into the main story for solo play. Most need 2+ players, and some use extra Switch 2s (not fully tested). Everything’s on one card with all fixes, the best version yet. Great for new players or groups.
The announcement received mixed and somewhat heated reactions on X Twitter.
One user criticized modern Nintendo, calling it disappointing and lacking creativity, which shows frustration with the company’s recent direction.
Another user shared a negative opinion about a recent game, saying it was not very enjoyable and became boring quickly, especially when compared to older titles in the “New” series. However, not everyone agreed with these criticisms.
A third user defended Nintendo and its fans, calling out the negativity and telling critics to stop hating, which shows that opinions are divided among users.
Solo fans get less bang. The heart of the game, creative worlds, tons of levels, and perfect fun stay the same. Skip it if you have the original, unless you want the pretty 4K or multiplayer. It’s the reviewer’s favorite to replay, but not as exciting as updates with lots of new solo content.
In the end, Wonder shows Nintendo nailed 2D Mario after weaker New Super Mario Bros. games. If it sells well, we might get more like it. It’s still a top game ever.
