Meta is stopping sales of its Quest virtual reality (VR) headsets to companies and ending some VR apps for work. This big change comes after the company recently laid off over 1,000 workers from its VR team.

Meta shared the news on Thursday. They will stop sending Quest headsets to businesses on February 20. The Quest 3, released in 2023, has a special chip from Qualcomm that handles processing, graphics, and AI. It shows sharp images at 2,064 by 2,208 pixels per eye. There’s also a cheaper Quest 3S from 2024 with the same chip but lower-quality screens—it costs $200 less.
One app closing is Horizon Workrooms, started in 2021. It lets up to 16 people meet in a virtual room using VR headsets and their cartoon-like avatars to share slides and work together. This shuts down on February 16.
Meta is also stopping sales of Horizon Managed Services (HMS), a paid tool for bosses to control company VR gear. HMS lets them set rules for which apps workers can use, tied to employee logins. It also allows password resets, wiping data from afar, and linking to other management software. They won’t sell it anymore next month, but will keep helping users until January 4, 2030.
This happens after layoffs hit hardware teams hard. Meta says in their blog: They’re now focusing on top-notch VR gear and apps for everyday people, not businesses. They still love VR long-term and plan to grow it.
Reality Labs, Meta’s VR group, is shifting to smart glasses like the Ray-Ban ones. Reports say they might double production to 20 million pairs a year. New Ray-Ban Display glasses have AI helpers and wristbands for hand controls. This shows Meta betting more on glasses than work VR headsets.
