HYDERABAD, India (GizTimes) —In a rising trend in indie shooters that have some style, MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is set to come out on April 16, 2026(Launch Trailer Out on YouTube). Being able to blend hand drawn animations with the first person shooter genre in one product makes MOUSE: P.I. For Hire a very interesting game based off the idea of Fumi Games and PlaySide Studios.
MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is set in a crime-infested city called Mouseberg, where the protagonist, Jack Pepper, is trying to unravel mysteries involving corruption, murder, and other aspects of a decaying society. In the plot of this indie game, noir detective storytelling meets cartoonish humor, which makes for a unique blend of serious and funny moments.
Overall, MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is a single-player first-person shooter that relies on Unity and the gameplay mechanics resembling that of boomer shooters such as Doom. Nevertheless, this project is not only a typical run-and-gun title but includes some investigation elements and puzzles.
The gameplay of this game consists of collecting clues, interacting with the environment and progressing according to the storyline, in the process of which a variety of puzzles and investigations may appear. Combat, which is one of the key aspects of any first-person shooter, involves using not only conventional firearms and melee attacks but also a number of unusual weapons such as freeze gun, chemical spray weapon and mind control. Moreover, these gadgets are customizable and allow players to be creative while dealing with enemies.
As for the artstyle, it is the key aspect of MOUSE: P.I. For Hire. All frames in this game are hand-drawn in black and white and are based on cartoons from the era of Mickey Mouse. All characters are animated using exaggerated techniques characteristic of early animation, and the environments look more animated than rendered, thus making the world in the game feel fully cartoony. In addition, the big band jazz soundtrack written by Patryk Scelina is enhanced with compositions created by Caravan Palace and provides for an immersive audio experience consistent with the 1930s setting.
Released on April 16, 2026, this indie shooter is available on PC through Steam platform, PS5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2. Versions for the previous generation of gaming consoles are yet to be released but the release date hasn’t been revealed yet. This game also supports Xbox Play Anywhere, thus providing cross-play between Xbox and PC platforms free of charge. Finally, MOUSE: P.I. For Hire is offered at $29.99 as a standard edition. A digital deluxe version for $39.99 contains DLC content, soundtrack and comic.
Development of the game has been taking quite long due to the desire to make the gameplay as deep as possible despite its unconventional nature. Initially, the release was expected for 2025, however, later the release has been postponed for a year. As noted by the developers of the game, the project is supposed to involve both fun and gameplay depth and should not rely solely on its artstyle.
Sentiment among the public at large seems to be cautiously optimistic with most of the curiosity being the fuel for such sentiment. In an example of what most players have been saying about this game, one player noted that the game seems to have “far more variety than it first seems.” This indicates the trend of players starting out skeptical only to become intrigued as more is discovered about the game. This is indicative of the general trend in the gaming industry whereby for a stylistic game to succeed, there needs to be sufficient mechanics.
The game joins the fray in a world of hybrid games where very few have attempted to combine the mechanics and style of FPS in such an aggressive way. Comparing the game to BioShock is valid in terms of the narrative element. However, the game can find no better match than that of Cuphead since both are visually striking in their own ways; however, MOUSE combines the style and the game mechanics in a new light.
The upcoming April 16 launch will likely determine whether MOUSE: P.I. For Hire’s blend of art style, narrative ambition, and hybrid gameplay succeeds or fails.
