Big news for Pokémon fans! Nintendo is releasing the classic remakes Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch and Switch 2. These are not free on Nintendo Switch Online you have to buy them. They launch on February 27, 2026, which is Pokémon Day. This marks 30 years since the first Pokémon games, Red and Green, came out in 1996.

The Pokémon Company will show more in a live stream called Pokémon Presents. It starts next Friday, February 27, at 2 pm UK time. That’s 6 am Pacific Time or 9 am Eastern Time for US fans. You can pre-order the games now on the Nintendo eShop. Each one costs £16.99. Watch the short teaser trailer to see how they look on Switch.
These games are remakes of the old Game Boy hits. They have better graphics, new areas like the Sevii Islands, and fun trading features. Now you can play them anywhere on Switch, not just old handhelds. They work on both the regular Switch and the new Switch 2.
Every year, Pokémon does this February event to celebrate the original games from Japan. This year is special because it’s my 30th birthday. The stream will likely talk about these new releases first.
We might hear more about Pokémon Pokopia, a new game coming on March 5. It’s like Animal Crossing but with Pokémon. People who tried it say it’s super fun like mixing Viva Piñata with Pokémon worlds. One writer called it the best spin-off in years.
Public reactions on (X) Twitter show mixed feelings about Nintendo’s re-releases.
One user was disappointed, calling it a “trash anniversary” because only a few titles were included instead of classic games like Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Gold, Pokémon Silver, Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon Ruby, Pokémon Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald, and Pokémon FireRed / Pokémon LeafGreen. This reflects frustration over missing nostalgic favorites.
Another user thought about it more deeply. They asked if Nintendo re-released the games because of nostalgia, to make more money, or to introduce Pokémon to new players.
A third user defended the pricing, arguing that $20 is reasonable compared to the high cost of buying old cartridges and hardware, especially if Pokémon can be transferred easily.
Other games could get updates too, like Pokémon Go, Pokémon Sleep, Pokémon Unite, and Pokémon EX Masters. Maybe news on the new Pokémon theme park in Japan? It opens next February with cool rides, like one with Pikachu and electricity. Some fans hope for hints about Pokémon Gen 10, the next big main game. Grab your pre-order if you love catching Pokémon in the Kanto region. It’s a great way to relive the classics on modern consoles.
